Saving...
the colonel doesn't "like his looks" may settle a man in spite of everything else. In view of this fact, after much meditation, I have sacrificed mercilessly one of the finest young blond mustaches ever raised out of Scandinavia. I had hoped to carry this through France but when I learned that all the members of the board are smooth shaven, I felt that it might be best to follow the cavalry injunction and "conform to those in advance." (pen-etre (?) more later). I don't know when or whether I'll be in Iowa City, but certainly hope and expect to be there Sunday. As soon as i find out for sure I'll drop a line to let you know definitely. The hospital corps man who examined me nearly fainted when he had to mark my eyes - "Right - normal - left 20-70." But that is quite enough. If the right eye had been half as bad as my left I should have been disqualified, however. I appreciated your letter. Most sincerely Robert M. Browning
