Saving...
November 14, 1917 Dear Miss Williams - Maybe I'm repeating. I don't know whether you or I have a letter "owing" but there's an enclosure that I want to call to the attention of a Friend. Woodrow Wilson expressed my point of view very clearly in his address to the "federated laborers". Also it is time for me to assure you that my senses have not left me so completely as certain notes might indicate. I'm still "foolishly hopeful" - more so than ever lately. Your predictions about the duration of the war and so forth make more of an impression that they seemed at first to be making. I am hoping now to get a brief furlough at Christmas, and if my friends don't all go away on holiday trips I may be in Iowa City part of the time in spite of what I said. Isn't that a cheerful prospect? My long-delayed commission has arrived (Nov. 10) It was among the first to come so I was spared the worry some of the waiters are experiencing. It says that the President reposes "special trust & confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of "your humble servant." It's quite uplifting to feel that Wilson is so impressed. I won't be a little boy any more now so please try to forget how I whimpered. Very truly yours, Robert M. Browning Lieut. of Infantry, U.S.A.
