Dec. 18, 1917 Dear Dr. Williams - This is certainly a busy season with one young subaltern. I'm in charge of the Officers' mess here and have to feed about a hundred fifty officers. We've recently started a strenuous course of lessons involving three one-hour classes every day with one two-hour class every other day. Preparation takes as much time as can be given. Then there is the company duty and instruction on top of that. It's certainly true - "It's a great life if you don't weaken -- and a short one if you do."
