If you still wish to let me carry your binoculars I will accpet them in the spirit in which you offered them - hoping that they may be of some help in the subduing the blonde (?) beast. Since writing last I've been tremendously cheered by two statements from the Colonel and the port adjutant. The Colonel said that the 36th would gov over this spring. Capt. (soon to be Major) Baird (?), (he's the adjutant) said we would be in France almost as soon as the 49th and that outfit's American address is Camp Merrit, N. J., one of the jumping off places. Today a letter was recieved saying that the sale of field glasses was indefinitely suspended. I'm hoping to get down to Iowa City inside of a couple of weeks, as I've been elected to members (?) with (?) Ancient and Honorable Craft of Masonry and hope to get my first degree at home. But I can't feel very certain of getting off, as this leave proposition is not as viable as it used to be. Here's hoping to see you , this (?). Cheerfully yours, Bob Browning
