May 19, 1918 Dear Miss Williams - Your letter just came and I hasten to reply. The picnic last evening was a great success. To fill up for the girls I took another Lt. Browning (N.G. of California, Sig. Res) out with me. He is a graduate of the U. of Wash. and was in the Forestry Service when he got into the Service. His experience as a Forest Ranger and my Boy Scout qualifications gave us a considerable advantage over the college boys who didn't know how to make a camp fire. After the picnic we had a mighty jolly dance until midnight, put down the mugs + fixed up the place for Sunday, sang a bit + headed back for the Port. We had a car, Lt. Eklund's Ford, you know, and were coming along nicely trying to beat a thunderstorm when a bolt of lightning split the sky wide open and dropped all the water in the world right on top of us. I believe I was never out in a worse storm. We got home, just as the worst was over, soaked through. It's beautiful today again and the grass and trees seem to be refreshed a lot more than we were. Good news! Our regiment is to be immediately filled up to war strength. The naturalization of aliens in the regiment is to begin tomorrow. A new company commander, one of the four West Pointers in the Regiment, took over our company Thursday, and is beginning the speeding up program in a way that appeals to me.
