Saving...
27 June 1922 Camp Dix Dear Miss Williams - The agony of suspense is over. I have decided to take your advice and cut out the older professions and enter a newer field. Life insurance is insufficiently appreciated. I intend to blossom out of my khaki into some bright raiment and go forth with a voice crying, in the vernacular, "Women and children first. Don't let the Masons and Knights of Columbus support your widow." Does that sound like real service? Has it a pleasant rustle of currency. Seriously, I have been converted by Karl Hoffman to the possibilities of insurance writing as a career and am almost ready to resign. I am but waiting for Congress to arrange a few minor matters in connection with the Army bill. The Pershing Bill as it started out provided for one year's pay to officers who resign. I want to see that bill signed if possible, before I cut loose. Otherwise I must stick until I save some money to replace some of that which I spent on my travels last winter. At worst I shall be a civilian this fall, at best I may be home in a few weeks.
