VAGABONDIA STF To correct a slight misstatement in a current issue of the FAN, the renewed [renowned?] stf writer C.D. Simak, did not make his debut in stf mags with the story HELLHOUNDS OF THE COSMOS appearing in the Clayton ASTOUNDING for June '32. It was his first appearance in that magazine, true, but not in stf mags in general. Simak first hit the public eye with THE WORLD OF THE RED SUN, a time-travel-tale appearing in WONDER Dec. '31. He also had MUTINY ON MERCURY In March '32 of the same magazine, as well as the VOICE IN THE VOID in the Spring '32 WONDER QUARTERLY. Fans with files handy may be able to find others: Your columnist is quoting only from hazy memory. It is interesting to compare outlooks on stf with the beginning of the years through the last few years. 10 years ago, there was but still one stf magazine, the original AMAZING, still in Gernsback's hands, cover by Paul, feature story by Marius-- swell two part tale THE SIXTH GLACIER. Fan activity almost entirely confined to discussions columns, with some talk of forming some sort of Science Correspondence Club. ... 1930 found three, no four, magazines going (not to mention quarterlies which we neglected above) with various contests in the Gernsback group, and science articles making their first definite appearance. ,.....31 and '32 finds little change, except by now the SCIENCE FICTION DIGEST is about to get under way.
