ANNUAL REPORT TO THE FACULTY SENATE Committee : Human Rights Year 2008-9 Committee Chair(s) Robin Paetzold Committee Members Lauren Dana Howard Cowen Hannah Joravsky Robin Paetzold Sehee Foss. Patricia Clinton (10/08-12/08) Joseph Barrah, Jeshua C Harbaugh-Williams, Astrid Oesmann (1/09-8/09), Brian White Committee Charge The University of Iowa brings together in common pursuit of its educational goals persons of many nations, races and creeds. The University is guided by the precepts that in no aspect of its programs shall there be differences in the treatment of persons because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex , disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and any other classification that deprives the person of consideration as an individual and that equal opportunity and access to facilities shall be available to all. Among the classifications that deprive the person of consideration as an individual are those based on associational preference. These principles are expected to be observed in the internal policies and practices of the University, specifically in the admission, housing, and education of students; in policies governing programs of extracurricular life and activities, and in the employment of faculty and staff personnel. The University shall work cooperatively with the community in furthering these principles. Meeting Dates September 17, October 24, November 25, 2007 , January 25, February 16, March 2, April 6, May 4, May 21, June 5, July 8, 2009 Activities 1. Ongoing discussions with UI Provost on his current vision of human rights on campus and how the Committee could be of best service to the University in meeting these goals. 2. Participated in Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Week committee planning and activities September 08 - January 09 3. Solicited nominations for the Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award, February- March 2009. Reviewed nominations and selected recipient Alexandra Keenan at the Finkbine Dinner April 2009. 4. Ongoing meetings and discussion with University officials and Coca Cola to explore issues relating to human rights concerns and vendor contract terms. 5. Participated on the One Community, One Book 2008 Committee in the selection of Animal Vegetable Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver as the 2008 community human rights book selection. 6. Representation in the Cultural Diversity Day planning committee 7. Met with EOD staff concerning recent EOD reports. 8. Met with Working at Iowa representative to discuss survey results 9. Ongoing participation in diversity initiatives including the Campus Climate Survey Committee 10. Handled inquiries concerning human rights violations complaints. 11. Appointed Human Rights Committee representative to serve as liaison to the UI Center for Human Rights Advisory Board 12. Participated in University committees and University consultants in the revision of the UI sexual assault policies. 13. Ongoing discussion on whether there is need for updating to the Committee charge
