10/26/9 Recommendations to the Human Rights Committee from the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Staff and Faculty Association Education Subcommittee. We request the following actions by the Human Rights Committee in order to encourage an understanding and inclusive atmosphere at the University of Iowa for all persons. 1. The Human Rights Committee to develop a letter stating its full support and recognition of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Staff and Faculty Association. This letter would be submitted to the President of the University of Iowa and made available as public information. 2. The Human Rights Committee urge University offices interacting with prospective students, faculty and staff to include in their introductory materials information about gay/lesbian/bisexual lifestyle options on campus and in the community. This information would pertain to social. political and academic organizations, classes, activities, benefits packages , etc. which are relevant to the lives of lesbian/gay/bisexual persons. The offices affected include (but may not be limited to): Staff Relations, Staff Relations and Development Office of the Registrar, Orientation Services, Housing Assignment Office and Office of Admissions. Specific materials could include the "New Employee Handbook", "Benefits Information" packet, "This is Iowa" booklet and "Handbook for New Students". 3. The Human Rights Committee urge University offices which provide cultural diversity training programs to include affectional preference as a topic so that cultural diversity of affectional preference shares the same positive attention that ethnic cultural diversity currently receives. Offices for consideration include Staff Relations, Staff Relations and Development, Affirmative Action, Personnel Services and Student Services. Special Support Services. 4. The Human Rights Committee develop a form letter which would be used to address incidents of prejudice in the campus community against any diverse culture, which would include affectional preference. This letter would be directed to the campus community by the way of the Daily Iowan. This letter would affirm the first amendment right to free speech yet rebuke prejudice, in any form, towards any group of cultural diversity. 5. The Human Rights Committee disseminate to all University offices the recommendation that the question concerning martial status, on all forms requesting demographic information from students, staff and faculty be changed to a question of Relationship Status with categories to include: single, married, cohabiting, separated, divorced, widowed or other. GOALS: These recommendations are proposed to continue the process of creating a campus environment that does not stop at the level of tolerating gay/lesbian.bisexual persons, but rises to a level of nurturing gay/lesbian/bisexual persons. Implementation of these recommendations would continue the University's efforts to create a nurturing environment for all its students and personnel.
