56. APRIL 20, 1908. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. ALEXANDRA & BERTIE, Trapeze and ladder:- 11 min. F.S. On at 7:41. This is a very showy act and makes an excellent opener. It could hold an early place in the two-a-day section with credit. A trapeze is suspended from a revolving ladder. The woman balances on one end of the ladder, the man does stunts on the trapeze, and then disrobes, hanging feat down. The woman disrobes simultaneously on the other end of the ladder. Each one of their subsequent feats got good hand. The finishing feat of the pair swinging on one strand of rope in the spot light is immense and won big applause. Closed well with one curtain call. BARRY & HUGHES:- 20 min. in 1. On at 7:52. This act is altogether too talky and would be improved by cutting out at least six minutes of the slang conversation. It contains several good hits on the vicissitudes of the cheap actor's life. The two songs are only fair, but the "Merry Widow" burlesque at the finish got a strong hand, with two curtain calls. Carry their own drop. VERNON, Ventriloquist:- 18 min. F.S. Close in a. On at 8:12. Advance hand. A great favorite here. Whereas his material was much the same as presented here before, it nevertheless made a hit. Closed very well. APDALE'S ANIMALS:- 15 min. F.S. On at 8:30. One of the best animal acts ever seen here. The dogs, monkeys, and bears are remarkably well trained, and do not only many of the regulation stunts, but many more that are new and highly entertaining. A superb children's act. The trained anteater is a novel feature, but the bear riding a tricycle and playing a banjo at the same time, and the triple chariot race at the finish for the house very strong. An act to be talked about anywhere. BILLY S. CLIFFORD:- Mono:- 19 min. in 1. On at 8:48. Advance hand. Good line of humorous material, well delivered. Stylishly dressed and has a good stage presence. Could hold any spot with credit. Good appreciation all the way through. The finish was strong with two curtain calls after closing song and his clever dancing. MINNIE SELIGMAN & CO:- "A Dakota Widow":- 26 min. F.S. On at 9:04. Advance hand. This sketch has been described before, and the good reports that have been received are fully justified for this house. The plot is simple portraying scene in a New York Home, where a wife on opening one of her husband's letters finds what she believe to be damaging evidence connecting him with a certain "Little Widow". This she uses as grounds for a Dakota divorce. The quarrel with the final peace-making when the "Widow" is discovered to be a coal mine and not a flesh-and-blood personage, has a great many bright lines and held the attention throughout. The finish brought big applause and three curtain calls. SIX LITTLE GIRLS AND A TEDDY BEAR:- 15 min. F.S. Open and close in 1. On at 9:30. This is a very sprightly and pleasing act, especially strong with the children. The girls are all pretty and sing and dance well. They are quite fetching in their last two changes of costume. Everett Scott as the Teddy Bear ranks with George Ali as "Spike" for genuine humor. The children's laughter could be heard all over the house during his antics. This act held down the spot in great style. Strong closing hand and two curtain calls. This won the house and gave him big closing hand. Worthy of solid booking at the right price. section that are worthy of a better spot. VASCO was a disappointment considering his price, but there are others on the bill which are worth every cent of their money, so there is no kick coming. Houses immense, and an abundance of humor and children's feature on the bill which are sure to insure us a continuance of big business. and eccentric dancing. At $90.00 this act is a find for the three-a-day houses and should do well number one or two in the smaller houses. Made a very good impression indeed, on to-day's audience and received some laughter and much applause. H. T. JORDAN--J.
