85. (Carl D. Lothrop) Boston Show, Week of May 18, 1908. (Monday May 18--Afternoon Show.) Overture. 1.30, 9 minutes. Shewbrook and Berry. On at 1.39, 12 min, in 1; 3 shows. This act looks very much like a find to me, as it is considerably out of the ordinary. Would like to give it a much better place on the bill, if possible. Feel confident that they would make good at 8.30 and 2.45 in this house. Ben Morse. On at 1.51, 11 min, full stage, 3 shows. Can open and close in 1, if necessary. I do not think that the line of talk that Morse has added to his act has improved it any. He could probably hold the number two spot in the smaller houses, but I think that is his limit. Reidy and Currier. On at 2.02, 14 min, in 1. Two good voices, two people who know how to use them, and some excellent selections. As good a straight singing act as could be asked for. Howard Truesdell and Company. On at 2.16, 21 min, full stage. Playing "Two Men and a Bottle", a sketch that certainly borders on the suggestive in many places, and is not the kind of an act that we like to play in this house. Would be happy if it was out of the bill this week, and certainly will never play it again. Was delighted to hear that Truesdell said this morning that he signed with the opposition for next season. I hope they get all the acts of this kind that there are in the business. Geiger and Walters. On at 2.37, 15 min, in 1. A very taking novelty that made a big hit with this afternoon's audience, and could hold a position much lower down the bill. Geiger's imitations on the violin are simply marvellous. Will be pleased to play them again next season. The Picquays. On at 2.52, 7 min full stage, 2 min in 1; 9 min in all. One of the best acrobatic acts of the season. They make a very fine stage appearance and the close in 1, with the man's buck dancing on his hands, won much hearty applause. Another act that could go much further down the bill. Almong and Dumont. On at 3.01, 12 min full stage, 3 min close in 1, 17 min in all. This straight musical act always makes good here. They are certainly great performers upon brass instruments and the woman's swell looks do not detract from the act by any means. Edward Connelly and Company, playing "Marse Covington". On at 3.18, 22 min, full stage. First visit since the original vaudeville production in this house, a year ago last January. One of vaudeville's choicest ornaments, a great sketch, well-nigh perfectly played. old after-pieces. An act that I don't think Tony Paster would dare headline. Cuts: Howard Truesdell and Co. One Damn. Reference to French professor at Harvard. This was in extremely bad taste, as the case to which he referred is one of the most disgusting that has occupied the attention of our courts in some years. Comment. A very good show indeed. If we were rid of Howard Truesdell and Co., and had a good comedy act in place, we would have a show good enough for any house at any time.
