Saving...
(Carl D. Lothrop) Boston Show, Week of June 22, 1908. (Monday June 22-Afternoon Show.) Overture. 1.30, 6 minutes. Burns and McCone. On at 1.36, 9 min, full stage; 3 shows. Comedy acrobatic act of the stereotyped kind, nothing out of the ordinary, although both men are good performers. All right as an opening act, but not strong enough to use as a closer, even in the small houses. XX Bernier and Stella. On at 1.45, 10 min, in 1; 3 shows. Two nice-looking young people who do a singing and dancing turn that is entirely unobjectionable. By this I mean that, while it will not create a riot anywhere, it will get by nicely in the number-two spot in the smaller cities. The girl could do better with a better partner. XX Vernon. On at 1.55, 15 min, full stage. He presented his new act today. While he has gone to considerable expense for special scenery and carries four people, I am forced to state that in the new act's present shape his old act is far preferable. With the offering he has given us for the last few seasons, he has always been a safe bet and could hold a good place in any bill with credit. I should be fearful about him with his scenic production. Louis M. Granat. On at 2.08, 14 min, in 1, 3 shows. Granat did extremely well with this afternoon's audience with his whistling solos, and could hold a better spot on the bill. An excellent investment, as his salary is, comparatively speaking, very small. XX1 Bedini and Arthur. On at 2.22, 15 min, full stage; can close in 1, if necessary, 3 or 4 min. Bedini is working very well indeed with his new partner. The present Arthur, while lacking some of the unction of his predecessor, who was a really great pantomimic comedians, gets many laughs and if one had never seen the original, he would seen almost like a genius. XX1 Gaston and Green. On at 2.37, 17 min, in 1. Miss Green is a remarkably dainty and clever girl, while Gaston, as an exaggerated type of college-boy, sings very well and does some excellent eccentric dancing. A very pleasing number indeed, the sort of an act that this house always likes. XX1 J. K. Murray and Clara Lane. On at 2.54, 24 min, full stage. Can close 3 to 4 min in 1, if necessary. Their popularity in Boston seems almost boundless. Their names here are as good as any thousand-dollar headliner we could find. They are both in good voice and went simply great this afternoon. They are in the market for next season, as well as for immediate time, and look like a good investment. XX1 Raymond and Caverly. On at 3.18, 16 min, in 1. It is due them to say that they made thoroughly good, although this house does not care particularly for German comedians. XX1 Martinez and Martinez. On at 4.40, 14 min, full stage; 3 shows. Can close in 1, if necessary. Fair musical act. O.K. for the continuous and smaller houses. XX Harry Burgoyne. On at 3 o'clock, 15 min, in 1; 3 shows. English coster singer who always makes good in this house, and could hold a spot up to 2.30 and 8.30 without any trouble at all. He could make good as number two almost anywhere, and is worth keeping in mind, because of the fact that he is a safe proposition to put in a bill that promises to be unusually costly on account of some expensive headline attraction. XX1 Cuts:- Burns & McCone. Omit bluff of throwing chair into audience. Bedini & Arthur. Cut throwing paper-plates into audience. Raymond & Caverly. Mention of "Mrs. Gunness", a local judge, and use of "Three Weeks' as a title for their song-book. Comment. A peculiar sort of show, but one that will do as well as a $5,000 bill at this time of the season, for Miss Phelan and Murray & Lane will draw as much as any two headliners that could be booked.
