Boston Show, Week of July 20, 1908. Carl D. Lothrop (Monday, July 20th--Afternoon Show.) Overture. On at 1.46, 7 minutes. D'Elmar Brothers. On at 1.53, 12 minutes, full stage, 4 minutes close in one, 16 minutes in all, three shows. A very fair acrobatic comedy act. It gets out of the rut by doing quite a lot of barrel jumping. They also use a clever dog. An excellent opening act and good value for $80 to $100. XX Pertina. On at 2.09, 7 minutes, full stage. A marvelous toe and contortion dancer, but alas her face and figure suffer sadly by comparison with her cleverness. If she was really good looking she would be pretty nearly a sensation, for her work is wonderful. It might be well for her for somebody to suggest that she work a la "The Girl in the Red Domino." Ethel Batting. On at 2.16, 12 minutes in one. She has had considerable Lyceum experience but this is her vaudeville debut. She is a pretty woman, possessed of a pleasing personality and considerable magnetism. She is a very good dialectician and tells stories extremely well. Her material is fresh and bright. At $75 to $100, I would consider her a very good investment. XX1 Reed Brothers. On at 2.28, 17 minutes, full stage. Can open for about 1 minute in one, if necessary. A Really excellent, novelty gymnastic act. Those who have it on their books for the coming season, have no reason to regret it, for they went extremely well here this afternoon, as well as many sight acts that we pay double the money to. XX1 Charles and Fanny Van. On at 2.45, 18 minutes in one. Repeated the hit they made when the act was first presented here last March. A corking good comedy act. "The Advance Agent." On at 3.03, 24 minutes, full stage. First presentation here of a sketch that is somewhat melodramatic. It is extremely theatrical and needs considerable playing to smooth off the rough edges. While the cast could be improved by the substitution of another man for Maurice Frank, who plays the advance agent, Mr. St. James in a sort of Den Thompson character, does very well, and the same may be said of Miss Bancroft in an ingenue role. I must say that the playlet pleased this afternoon's audience better than it did me, and there is no question in my mind, but that it would make good emphatically in the small cities. XX1 of making good with, rather than the gems from any single opera. Our experience these two weeks shows that it is almost impossible to get a satisfactory tenor, where the bill is changed every week, for the money the act can afford to pay. XX Kinetograph. On at 4.49, 25 minutes. "In China." A very interesting travel picture. "A Magnetic Removal." One of the best comedy films that we have had recently. Comment. A very good summer show, indeed. The running order for the rest of the week, will be as follows;-- D'Elmar Bros., Pertina, Hamilton and Howlett, (who arrived too late to work this afternoon,) "The Advance Agent," Ethel Batting, Reed Brothers, Charles and Fanny Van, Kelly and Kent, Laddie Cliff, and The Romany Company.
