AUG. 3-08. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C. E. BARNS. THE CYCLING BRUNETTES. 12 min. Full Stage. Two men, onw working military costume, the other as a tramp. Make a very good opener. Their work is skilful, much of it new and the comedy is good. Considerable applause throughout and strong finish for an act of this kind. Can be well recommended. THE GREAT LESTER. Ventriloquial Wonder. 18 min. in one. This man works with a single figure and without any paraphernalia, other than a table, chair, cigarette, decanter and glass. His work is different from the usual run of ventriloquists and the novelty of the act won the crown quite strong. The illusion of the figure apparently singing a song while the operator smokes a cigarette or drinks from a glass, is perfect. Laughter and applause throughout and a very strong close, for an act of this kind. SWAN AND BAMBARD. Eccentric Comedians. 16 min. Full Stage. Small advance applause. This act consists of some good contortion and acrobatic work, and a whole lot of very amusing nonsense of a burlesque order. Both men appear in grotesque costumes. Some of their work is the same as on their previous engagement here, though a good deal of it is new. They were well received; closed strong. CARBREY BROS. Novelty Dancers. 9 min. in one. These two boys dress alike and are as alike as two peas, both in their manner, appearance and work. They have improved since their last appearance here, and got a strong applause for each part of their act. Breaks away from the usual run of dancing teams on the mat. Good closing hand. BUTLET AND BASSETT. Skatorial Artists on Real Ice. 10 Min. Full Stage. This ia very novel and timely midsummer act. The costuming of both the man and woman are stunning and their work thoroughly artistic and interesting. Considering the small sheet of ice upon which they skate, it is well nigh remarkable that they can hold the interest of the audience for ten minutes because the small space limits their work to the minimum. The stage set representing a country snow scene is very effective and gives the figures a picturesque back-ground. Altogether a very satisfactory act for a good spot on the bill. THE KEMPS. "Going to Dahomey." 18 min. Olio and drop in 1. The first consists of song selections, all of which have been heard here before, with some dancing all fairly well received. The second part is better, with a drop representing a tropical scene, both the man and woman appearing in barbaric costume of the natives. The song introduced then is original and took very well. This act could hold a good spot without any trouble. T. H. MCGRANE & CO. in "The Avenger." Advanced applause. This is a melodramatic act concerning the sorrows of a man who imagines that a railroad magnate has been the cause of the elopment of his wife, and was moreover responsible for the deaths of his two children in a railroad wreck which he could have prevented. He binds the magnate hand and foot and makes him believe that the prisoner's own child is meeting a like fate in order to torture him. Act is very much of the Blaney style, but appealed strongly to the gallery and got good applause. LADDIE CLIFF. Comedian and Grotesque Dancer. 21 min. in one. Same songs as he has sung on previous engagement here, with one exception. Mad the same big hit as before. This boy is certainly a genius. extent and the substitution of new material for much that is antiquated. Talk is rather weak. Two changes of costume, including Italian and the "tough" characters. Closed fair. MARGARET SCOTT. Soprano Singer. 11 min. in one. Octoroon with a high soprano voice singing fairly well. An acceptable act for a small place. GENERAL REMARKS. As revised, this makes a good show, although it is shy of comedy and there is a little too much dancing. The running bill as revised is as follows:- Lester, Swan and Bambard, The Kemps Kiddieland, Carbrey Brothers, Butler and Bassett, Louise Dresser, T. McGrane & Co., Laddie Cliff, Desval, Kinetograph, Robertson & Fanchette and Margaret Scott.
