Boston Show, Week of October 19, 1908. Carl D. Lothrop. (Monday Evening--Oct. 19, 1908.) Devere and Greenwood. On at 7.09, 16 minutes in one. Three shows. An act that was discovered at one of our trial shows, tried out again at a Sunday concert, and then booked for this week. A young fellow and girl who play juvenile characters. Both sing very well and the girl has the making of a very good performer. I consider her considerably cleverer than the boy, who has a fine singing voice but lacks some of the magnetism she seems to possess I would like very much to see them tried out in some of the other houses, particularly Philadelphia and Providence, where they would surely prove of value in the three show section on account of the time they do. I feel warranted in recommending them at $80.00 XX Overture. On at 7.25, 7 minutes. Ed Morton. On at 7.32, 15 minutes in one. This clever chap scored an unqualified hit with his songs. He is one of the finds of the season, and I regret extremely that I can not give him a better spot. Will be pleased to play him a return this season, if he has an open week. XX1 Valdare Troupe. On at 7.47, 13 minutes, full stage. The best act I have ever seen the troupe do. As always, the girls are attractively costumed and work with a lot of snap. Another act that could hold a much better spot. XX1 Fred Watson and the Morrissey Sisters. On at 8.00, 14 minutes in one. This well known act held this spot with credit. Watson is doing a lot more singing than formerly, which is not a great improvement, as his voice is not particularly agreeable, having a peculiarly rough quality. Do not consider that the act classes with Smith and the Melnotte Twins. They certainly did not go as well, either with the afternoon or evening audience. XX Czarina's Guards. On at 8.14, 10 minutes, full stage, special set. Rather a pleasing novelty, but it seems to me that the act is overpaid. The big hit of the act is the dancing by a Russian boy, who is a wonder. The wall scaling is tame in comparison with that of the American military acts. Not strong enough for the closing feature here. It would be O. K. for that position in most of the smaller cities, however. XX Otto Brothers. On at 8.24, 15 minutes in one. These boys have improved their act greatly this season, so much so, that I would just as soon have them as any Dutch act in the business, Scored heavily at both shows to-day. XX1
