NOV. 23-08. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C. E. BARNS. LEWERS & MITCHELL. "A Girl and a Girl." 18 min. in one. One of the young ladies works straight, the other comedy makeup of the old maid variety. The humorist has a good line of talk, fairly well delivered, and got some scattered laughs. Her mate makes a very pretty appearance in a white gown, and sings very daintily. A good act for the three-a-day section. BROTHERS DAMM. 7 min. F. S. This rather elderly man and the fellow who works with him are more like a grandfather and grandson so far as the difference in the ages is concerned. The elder is a very heavy man, and seems to be somewhat out of training. For all that, he gets there with some really remarkable feats. Got a strong hand. There is a little odd mixture of comedy which helps the act. Big closing hand. ARTHUR WHITELAW. 15 min. in one. Well known on the Circuit. Introduced a good deal of new stuff, some of his monologue having been heard here before. The parodies were new and were well received. "You're Right, Paddy" speech won the crowd very well and gave him a good closing hand. CZARESS LIFE GUARDS. 10 min. F. S. This act made a good appearance, differing somewhat from the usual Zouave as well as the usual Russian dancing act. Opened with patriotic Russian songs by the nine women, then proceeded to a characteristic Russian dance and drill, winding up with the wall scaling. The audience received the act very well and gave it a good finishing hand. Think that its novelty is sufficient to warrant a good spot. LADDIE CLIFF. 20 min. in one. Got an immense reception today. Sang some new songs and some that have been heard here before. Went stronger than ever. This boy is a genius if there ever was one, and I look to him to duplicate the success of Harry Lauder or any other single artist in the world. A great closing hand which lasted for some moments and compelled him to make a little recitation. Laddie is a sure card now anywhere. MARCEL'S PICTURES. 20 min. F. S. Third and last week of the Marcel pictures, with four new ones and all of them receiving a good hand. This feature has been a big success with us for the past three weeks. STUART BARNES. 18 min. in one. Had a ripping good line of stuff today and from his advance hand to the finish, held the spot in great shape. EMMET DEVOY & CO. "In Dreamland." 26 min. F. S. This sketch depends more upon its "business" and fire-surprises built upon the actual merits of the lines. However, the audience liked it and it held the spot all right. EVA TANGUAY. 19 min. in one. Rousing big advance hand. Sang three new songs in stunning changes of costume. Each song got a big hand and the close was as immense as usual. There is no doubt at all about Tanguay's immense popularity here. They simply would not let her go this afternoon until she had given everything she knew. A great drawing card. SIX MUSICAL CUTTYS. 17 min. F.S., close in one. This act is certainly greater than ever in assurance, close harmony and versatility. presentation of it was not particularly effective. Small hand at the finish. 14 min. F. S. KATHARINE BARTLETT. Vocalist. 13 min. in one. Rather a pretty girl with a fair singing voice. Three changes of costume and a good selection of songs. A very acceptable three-a-day act. LIEUT. ROBT. ELDRIDGE. 10 min. in 1 1/2. Second appearance of this man on our stage. Silful and interesting lot of work with colored sands, winding up with a fire picture which wins the applause. A good three-a-day novelty. GENERAL REMARKS. This is certainly one big bill all right, and the public went away very enthusiastic over it. Tanguay's popularity here is assured, the Cuttys were an immense hit, as was also Laddie Cliff. There was not a weak spot in the show, and it played off very smoothly. We look for a big Thanksgiving Holiday week.
