REPORT ON THE COLUMBUS SHOW FOR WEEK OCT. 4, 1909. W. W. PROSSER. THE WHEELERS: Man and woman in a comedy juggling act. The woman makes a very good appearance and the man does some comedy juggling that went very well. They have quite a few novel ideas, away from the general run, and while the act did not go big they were quite well rewarded at the finish and won quite a great deal of applause at various places throughout the act. Makes a very fair opener and really no fault can be found. 12 minutes, garden in 4. OSCAR LORAINE: Protean violinist. Carries a special drop on which are painted portraits of a number of famous violinists. He impersonates both the appearance of the player and the manner of playing and all of his work was most favorably received. The act is distinctly novel and was an unqualified success from beginning to end. Finished very strong and was compelled to take several bows. 16 minutes, special set in 1 1/2. FRED BOND & FREMONT BENTON: In a comedy dramatic sketch, "My Awful Dad". There are two men, one woman and an extra man in this act. It gained the attention of the audience almost from the beginning and went big throughout. There was a distinctly favorably finish and they took several bows. All of the work of the players was satisfactorily enacted and the sketch must be voted a success. 24 minutes, oak interior in 3. McDONALD, CRAWFORD & MONTROSE: Man and two women in a singing and dancing act, which during the early part dragged quite a little but afterwards picked up and finished fairly strong. All three of the people make a very good appearance and they are especially well dressed, looking fine from the front. The introduce a number of kinds of dancing some of which only went fairly well, but the finish was moderately strong. Their routine of work in the last number looks very much like an attempt to copy the Four Fords but the work is not nearly so well accomplished. The act was not a failure, however, and got by moderately well. 12 minutes, oleo in 1. "AT THE SOUND OF THE GONG": Appropriately termed a dramatic episode of the prize ring. There are four principals in this act, one woman, three men. It opens in a special set in 1 1/2, during which a lot of preliminary talk and comedy is introduced, all of which got by nicely. The conversation and business leads up to where the fight opens, showing a prize ring in 4 with a special backing, also disclosing a number of supers to represent the audience. The act closes in the opening set. Throughout it was a distinct success, and during the fight proper the audience become thoroughly worked up, a great many of the men and a lot of the women in the audience becoming very much interested and getting into the spirit of the thing by yelling and cheering, a most unusual demonstration for this house. Would term this act a complete success. 19 minutes, opens in special 1 1/2, goes to special in 4, closes in special 1 1/2. JONES & DEELY: In the "Hotel St. Reckless". These two boys have evolved a most excellent black face comedy act. They have a special drop in it showing the interior of a hotel. At the right center of stage there is a practical door supposed to open into elevator. The use of this door by the comedian of the team is most laughable, every entrance and exit being a signal for hilarity. Jones sings a straight ballad, Deely has a comedy coon song and they finish the act with a very catchy duo for a finale. The act is quick, bright and snappy and went big throughout. They were compelled to respond with another song in one at the finish and they took two or three bows. A decidedly meritorious offering and one that should prove a sure fire hit almost any place. 22 minutes, special set in one. DeWITT, BURNS & TORRANCE: In their creation, "The Awakening of Toys". This act was emphatically successfully, all the work of the three persons being well received and applause being freely demonstrated throughout the performance. They finished strong and must be credited with scoring a good solid success. Special set in 4, 12 minutes. MOVING PICTURES: O. K.
