Saving...
28 was understood! We've told our friends! And you know our Eugenics cards check to five decimals. That's almost a record. What more do you want?" Myra glanced quickly away. Always when Ric looked at her in that appealingly childish way something inside did things to her, and she knew she must love him. And of course she was going to file her paper. But first--- "What more do I want?" she said in answer to his question. "Well, I'm not quite sure; but for one thing, do you know that you've never once said you love me?" "But you know I do! It's stated right on the paper, and it has the Government stamp!" "That's what I mean. You've told the Government you love me, but you haven't told me. And you've never asked me whether I love you." "Myra, you're just being childish," Ric said a bit severely. Why should I ask you such a thing when I know it? Both our Eugenics and Social charts show that we'reideally adapted to each other. All we need now is the formality of your Declaration paper. I filed mine months ago! As for this love business---" He shook his head puzzledly. "Myra, I've noticed a change in you the past month or so, and I think I know what it is. It's those old-fashioned plays you've been having on the telerad. Am I not right?" "Maybe," she sighed, but Ric knew he was right. The rest of the way home neither of them said much, and Ric had the feeling that nothing had been settled. Only once more did he break the silence to say: "Even Gormley was casting innuendos about it tonight. He said to me once, with that silly smirk of his, that if you didn't decide prety soon he was going tofile his own Declaration for you. 'Maybe she's waiting for more competition,' he said So -- you see?" Myra saw. AndRic saw her shudder at the thought of Gormley. The strange new servant girl admitted them, and again Ric looked at her curiously. "Myra," he whispered ,"who is that? You never told me you were getting a new maid!" "Ah -- so you like her!" Ric's face turned red. Myra laughed delightedly. "So she fooled you too? You've got to look close to tell the difference. That's the latest robot importation from Paris! Father bought her for me, was going to keep her hidden until my birthday next week. But a few days ago she slipped her gears or something, and strode in here, so father had to tell me about it then." "A robot!" Ric exclaimed. "It's unbelievable. But -- I did think there was something funny about her. I mean it ."
