fanfare 17 More STF Recollections by sinn-yk-uhss It was with unlimited patience that an old uncle was made the victim of that urge for more reading. Each fall he came thru, on his way to Florida. This particular year, he came thru just as Ray Cummings' "Fire People" was running in Argosy. It was a source of considerable wonderment why anyone would want to go to Florida, but that mystery was solved later. He was watched closely, and as soon as he would put the magazine down, it was snared, to be ready avidly. it finally got to the stage where he squawked at being watched so closely, and the vials of parental wrath were poured out liberally. School presented its problems. A particularly annoying English teacher was snared into the stfield, and rendered helpless thereafter, when out of self-defense at her harping, a choice fantasy on the mystic elements in the Ancient Mariner, accompanied by a map inscribed with a background of haphazardly drawn Barsoomian calots and thoats, all mixed with a couple of Japanese wall and cranny boogies and a particularly intriguing wind demon. The whole was an exasperated product, and its exceptionally fine reception nearly caused a paralysis. 'Twas a case of surprise on both sides, and the following investigation into its sources resulted in her introduction and entanglement in stf. Her delight was in weirds and fantasy, but that was of minor interest as long as she shut up. "The Narrative of A Gordon Pym" lifted the veil about Poe. He still makes excellent re-reading, and the various speculations about him in the varying books are more or less always eagerly read. School and its problems again brought about an introduction to some more heavy reading. The Ancient History class was startled one afternoon when the teacher was refuted in her argument by a direct quotation from Herodotus. It had been brought about by her chance reference to his History some weeks before. Its very name appealed, and had consequently been investigated. This involved a trip to the local library, where the assistant librarian earned a deep scorn by loudly questioning, and mixing several others into the conversation, on the simple written request for the book. She assumed it too mature for the looks of the borrower. Considerably annoyed by the clamor that arose, and disgusted out and out, the inquiry was finally put; did they have the book?-- if they did, here is a perfectly good card on this library, how about taking the book and quieting down a bit. Furious, the discussion was beginning to take on the proportions of loud bickering on both sides, until the senior librarian brought from out of the office by the noise, inquired into the matter. It was settled by the loan of the book.
