fanfare 19 FANS sez e everett evans are the FRIENDLIEST PEOPLE A little incident which just occurred has started me thinking on the many and various facets of this thing we call Fandom. And one of the most outstanding of these many traits is the utter and charming stuplicity[[?]] of the FRIENDSHIP of those who comprise Fandom. I have done my share of travelling about this old earth, and have been at times in various kinds of groups, but never in my life have I been associated with any gang, bunch, crowd, group, or whathaveyouse, that can compare in that plain, simple attribute of Friendliness. Item. You happen to get into correspondence with a chap in another city - perhaps many states away. You write several times, calling each other by first names or nicknames. THen one day, oh joy! you get a letter stating that he is going to be in your city on such and such a day, and would like to meet you. Now, all you really know about this fellow is that he is a Fan. But does that make any difference? None whatever. You shoot back a letter by return mail, exuberant in your joy at this coming meeting. You start making plans for his visit. You notify all your fan friends within a radius of a hundred miles or more that he is coming, and urge them to make plans to come on over and meet him. And, you write him, "You know my address - well, you go so and so from the railroad station, or if you are coming by bus, you go thus-and thus and I live the second house past the school. If I don't happen to be at home when you get there, just walk right in and make yourself at home. I get out of work at 6:15, and will be home a few minutes after that. Don't you dare go out ot eat. You are to eat with me. If you are to be alone, I can put you up with me, and if you have your family with you, I'll take care of your hotel. Boy! It's going to be wonderful to have a chance to entertain you! Wish the time would hurry and pass!" Is the guy honest? Will he walk away with the family silver instead of waiting for you to come home and meet him? Will he grab your Finlay and Bok originals and run before you get there? DO YOU KNOW HIM? You do not! But, he is a Fan, and that's enough for you - he has the run of your joint, whether you are there or not. And some people have the guts to say that Fans are nuts? Pshaw! Item. You get a fanmag from a Fan in another country. You immediately write back to him, thanking him, and giving a review
