the last minute 35 ally impossible of attainment because this old typer is incapable of cutting a perfect,or even better-than-avg stencil, without a tremendous amount of backspacing, restriking, etc, that consumes an immense amount of time. I do not have much time to spend, and have come to realize that the time I do have to spend, will be more profitably invested,(both for my readers and myself) in a FANFARE that is smaller, oftener, and less pretentious - and I think everybody will be happy. The F.A.P.A should be especially, since FANFARE (starting with #10, which I hope to have the Dec. mailing will combine with YHOS & POLL CAT & be present in every mailing, even if it is only one sheet. But I think it should average 16-3030[[?]] pages per issue. There will be fewer articles concerning stf and fantasy as reading matter, and more concerning the ideas and speculations this type of fiction leads, and stimulates. I hope that FANFARE will be the centre of no less than three lively debates, discussions, or discourses, at any one time. I hope that Chan Davis' "Homo Speculus" coming up nextime will give rise to one. In fact, nothing really interesting will be barred because of subject matter alone, even if it is as far from stf as the discussion on ladies hats which recently appeared in FANTAST. Doug Webster's effort and ZENITH, incidentally, I consider the best in the field, either in the British Isles, or in the US, and I intend to praise em by imitation. Members of the FAPA desiring same, will be refunded the balance of their subscriptions to FANFARE but I Hope they will assist in this, my endeavor to help ye FAPA by establishing a precedent as the first "big" subscription fanzine to enter the fold, hoping that some others will follow, altho there all too few of them now. FANTASITE, VOM, and LoZ, seem to be the only ones of the old guard "regulars" still struggling -- so perhaps my step isn't so "epoch-making" after all. But it isn't "war economy" that's the cause of it. I've been thinking of it ever since #8, and the difficulties encountered over this issue have made the decision final. EDITORIALIBIS: "Of Lice and Men" in this issue, is not presented as a polished play, requiring only that certain fans shall memorize their lines and step before the footlites - but as a sort of framework, the first step in the development of what I think is a pretty good idea. The reception of the terribly crude performance given at Boskone II is highly encouraging, and I hope that someone will try to mold Len Moffatt's excellent beginning into a full-fledged play or movie, to be presented at the Pacificon, after the war. I meant to have a number of pretty pictures in this issue, but alas, there is no time. But cheer up, they will help to swell future issues. The lack of time also means a rather small issue for #10, if I even manage to get anything at all done on it by December 1st. THE FIGHTING FAN will be a supplement included with FANFARE consisting of writings by Milty, 4e, Lew Martin, and perhaps Ecco Connor and Joe Gilbert. Until then or so, this is your North Weymouth correspondent who took off his glasses to try "Saidak2, and couldn't even see the Big Dipper, let alone any such small potatoes as Alcor! --- signing off . . . . . y h o s
