This multiplication is really just a martix multiplication; has nothing to do with tensors yet. [Diagrams] a b c a 1 3 5 b 2 7 -1 c 4 1 -2 . a -1 b 2 c 3 = a 20 b 9 c -8 [end diagram] The importance of tensor analysis lies in its applicability to many purposes. In science fiction we have spoken of the increasing complexity of the sciences, and the need for a coordinator to tie to other the work of the specialists. Tensor analysis offers a powerful tool for the use of this coordinators, for by its use a person with a fundamental general knowledge can solve problems previously open only to a specialist. A paragraph in the introduction to Kron's book on Tensor Analysis makes fascinating reading. "Let there be a collection of zero, one, two, and three dimensional spaces. These spaces may be flat, curved, distorted, and so on. Let this collection of spaces be interconnected and interlinked with one another in a large variety of ways analogously to the large variety of engineering structures, and let upon each of these structure certain types of configurations be drawn (say the shortest line between any two point on the structure) analogously to the physical phenomenon superimposed upon the engineering structure. "Of course, esach of these configurations can be expressed in the form of an equation, when some arbitrary referrence frames are assumed on each structure. One of the problems to be investigated is to find an easy way to establish the qeuations of the confirgurations drawn on all the different types of structures provided the equation drawn on on particular structure is known." ............................................................ So we go from a class in tensor analysis to a class in anti-tank security. Versatile, ain't we? .................................................................................... Speaking of the army, Lynn Bridges' remarks in the last mailing are not so much disagreements but additions to my opinions. Grippin is a tension-release mechanism in addition to humor. I happen to use the latter more than the former, altho it seems that the artice of mine which started this was in the nature o f a gripe. I believe that statistics would show the intelligent man in peacetime ranks to be the exception rather than the rule. Unless the international army gets rid of all the c_____ s_____ that this army is full of, most people I know would not care to be in it.
