Sept 17, 1944 Dear Folks, Here it is Sunday afternoon and I haven't done a thing, but write Ken today. I was lazy I guess and didn't get up until 12:00. I'll start with Wed. and catch up with the news. Thurs. we took the fellows we were teaching out to let them fire the mortar. Before they fired I got to fire quite a few shells to show them how it was done. We were on the range all day. That night I found a good book and did nothing, but read till lights out. Fri and Sat. we gave tests to see if the fellows new enough to be a mortar man. I was both coach and judge during the tests. We tested them on working the mortar against time. It was fun. Sat. afternoon "6 ft 6-1/2" and I went to town to get his girl a birthday present. We had a steak dinner, saw a movie then came back to camp about 10:30. Boy, are these towns dead around here.
