July 22, 1944 Dear Folks, Here I am back in the groove again. I'll start from the first. I got a seat all the way back so that was a help. When I left Washington I sat with a Sheetzs (girl(s) or however its spelled from over by Tallyrand. Anyway we talked rather than sleep. We finally made it to Chicago at 11:00, which was way late. Rose wasn't there and I called her apt, but no one was in. I gave up and went to the other station. I met 3 of the fellows so we took the next train out. We arrived in Montgomery Thurs. noon. We didn't have to be in camp till Fri night so we stayed in Montgomery. We saw the state capitol etc. We came back Fri and got here at 11:00 Fri night. I just crawled on a bunk and let things ride till morning. We had an inspection of our weapons so I had to unpack and clean my pistol and mortar. This afternoon I read letters. I mean just that for I had 22 letters waiting. My gosh, I don't think I'll ever get them answered. One was from Rose telling me why
