July 5, 1945 Dearest Evelyn, Just finished taking an ice cold shower so perhaps I can stay awake for a while now. Believe me, I'm tired. Didn't get to bed last night until five o'clock and that is no good. Standing guard as usual. Didn't get any sleep today either so you can imagine what kind of shape I'm in. I can take midnight picnics, but not this all night guard. No mail today but heck, I got the letter I wanted so I'm not minding too much. You have no idea how much that letter meant to me. The more I think about it the more I realize just how lucky I am to
