Aug 26, 1944 Sat. morning. Dear Evelyn, I'm supposed to be cleaning my equipment this morning, but I finished mine so I'll write a few lines. I just hope they don't catch me at it for they told us to keep working on our stuff. We spent the past week in the field and it was no fun. We nearly walked ourselves to death along with starving and no sleep. We would eat breakfast about four o'clock and would receive two sandwiches for lunch, which were to last us until supper which was about ten o'clock at night. Did you ever eat in the dark when you couldn't see what you were getting? Now about this walking. We covered seventy-five miles in two an a half days and we were working along the way.
