December 20, 1945 Dear Vera & Steamer, For 4 days I've been trying to get this written & now I will or else. I got a cablegram from Carroll. When I sent my announcement in I wrote him the same nite & told him I had. He has received that letter & had sent this to say how very happy and said he was O.K. I was in the director's office when Western Union called, so I took the call there. She kept saying "bad news." With me standing there smiling from ear to ear. And then tears came to my eyes. All day my mind kept wandering far away. It was so wonderful to hear from him. The last letter I got was written on Thanksgiving day. And they really had a dinner. Had a letter from Rose today. Said it was beginning to get cooler at nite. And finally she has heard from
