January 12 8:00 P.M. [1943?] Dear Mom,- So your "heaping coals of fire" eh? Maybe I do deserve it at that, but perhaps this will make up for it a little bit. I wonder just how happy "Smitty" is? If he's as happy as he would have been if it hadn't of been for Evelyn's untimely death. But if his new wife can make him happy, knowing about Evelyn as she must, then I say more power to her. In a way, it could be a very hard row for her to hoe. Read with much interest, the letter from Mrs Addy. Glad to get the Middleport news. There's only one thing I wonder about. Why hasn't the Doc ever replied to my card? It's the first time that he has ever failed in that respect. I hope he's well and able to write. Glad to hear about Bill [Schooley?], also. Hope he's home for good this time. for Alice's sake, if no one elses. She deserves it after the way she's kept the home fires burning through thick and thin. You mentioned coming down to see me.
