Saving...
January 1 1917. I watched the New Year in with Hans. Sleighing fine from yesterday's inch of snow on icy roads. Took Hans to 3:10 P.M. train to Granger. It was half hour late - we got an extra sleigh ride around West Liberty. 1918. Woke just as the New Year came in to wish Hans a "Happy New Year". Our home now is some 600 miles from where we were a year ago. Sleighing continues fine - only no sleigh! Orville Kalb brought us 10# wild rice as a gift. Tried to snow more. I baked oatmeal bread, churned 3# butter, began ironing, cleaned downstairs. Hans made me fine new wash-bench. 1919. Slept all alone in house. Zero, but fine sunny day. Saw a bobsled when I went down for mail, but not much sleighing. I shoveled walks, as Hans is out in country. Margaret Westling + her father came for dinner, Bernice Byrnes coming soon after. I ironed some, mopped, wrote to mamma and Helen, Anna and Partha. 1920. Hans spent day with me at Elmenhurst, having finished his co. agent work in Dakota. -3°. We sleep in front room downstairs, in corner where we used to sit! I cut out black & white dotted dress for Hilda. Resolved to practice and get out of doors each day this year. Weaned Hilda. 1921. Nice and sunny, but snow melted to make it very muddy. Finished my week's ironing and mending, and wrote Hillside circle letter. Harry's last day working for us; we hope to do without much hired help this year.
