Saving...
JUNE 8 1917. We "shingled" our cabbages on the school farm for protection; hunted up a cook-stove, borrowed of Mr. Peterson, bought a few supplies and Hans took them out to our country "camp". I wrote letters. Then we planted 24 tomato plants, sowed beans, etc., working again till nearly nine o'clock. Sun sets 8:20 P.M. 1918. Tired, but hoed a little here, baked two kinds of wheatless breads and an all-barley cake. Cleaned up house and put down our two big rugs. Did the mending. Wrote circle letter. Plumbers came finally and put our cellar drain in working order. In evening Hans and I hoed out last weed patch and planted cane + brown beans. 1919. We started at 4:00 A.M. from Skotts' and got along fine till we got off the main road and into a mudhole about 8 o'clock. Found lots of bad roads just before Manchester, then Hawkeye Highway was fair to Iowa Falls where we put up at hotel. 1920. I baked bread, mopped floors, picked berries and made strawberry short cake. Constance helped me sew on my new muslin petticoat. which I cut out and sewed on. Wrote to mamma and Helena. Hottest day yet. Set out dozen tomato plants mamma gave me. 1921. Did a good bit of ironing, and, finished Hilda's rompers. Letter from Amanda.
