Saving...
June 16. 1917. Hans' work away from home begins. While he was gone in forenoon, I baked oatmeal cookies, and "cleaned up camp". A half dozen of the Norwegian school kids called on us while we drilled in sweet corn, beans, and mangels. We walked to town at 4:00. Found our tomato plants frozen, also beans, and others nipped. Tired when we got home. Had first new peas. 1918. We visited the ministers of the town, leaving notices to be read at church of our canning kitchen meeting I had arranged for. Went to church, which was kept fairly comfortable with electric fan. We wrote newspaper articles in P.M. Hans went to Mitchell at 7:38. I took him to train in Ford. Wrote to papa. 1919. Pansies begin blooming. Head lettuce is fine. Wrote to mamma. My clothes need much fixing- I'm getting fat. Enlarged belt of old tissue gingham dress. We planted navy beans in big garden. Hilda went to sleep early- but I could not. 1920. Constance and I had ironing done and 14 qt. strawberries picked by ten. Glen and I cleaned up chickenhouse. I baked bread. At 3 went over for Hans' grandmother. It rained, and we got on this side of mailbox and skidded into a ditch, steering gear off. Walked home. 1921. We canned 6 qt. veal, 1 of soup, and 2-1/2 qt. peas, and baked bread. Bert Warren here for dinner.
