AUGUST 8 1917. Baked oatmeal cookies again, and steamed rye and corn bread, which turned out O.K. Ironed as I had fire anyway. Mended most of the P.M. Best rain we've seen here. Figured our household furnishings, including those Hans and I had before marriage, and those bought since, to 1918. Hans and I carried in a lot of sweet corn from the garden. I canned 13 qts, also 3 of tomatoes, 1 of cucumber pickles and 1 pt. watermelon pickles. Had first garden huckleberries to eat. Busy from 7A:M to 10 P.M. Steamed bread, etc. Too tired to sleep well. Hans gone all night again. 1919. Hans up early to attend fair at Fonda, Ia. Amanda and I had to repair Ford then she got corn and we canned 8 qt., also 8 qt. tomatoes. I baked bread, sewed a little. We drove down to meet Hans, but missed him someway. Not so hot. Amanda and I went to town. Hilda weighs 13 1/2. 1920. Our Ford in Elwood for repairs, Constance and Jim drove to Maquoketa for the day. I drove Dexter to S.S. Velma and Miss Hunter rode with me. 19 there. Slept in P.M. while Hans and Hilda went to folk's. Had headache and too tired to go to church. 1921. Somewhat tired from trip. Straightened up, did some mending. Wrote to Constance, and card to Mary. Slept 1 1/2 hrs in P.M. I weigh 140 lbs., Hilda 30 1/2. She has lost 3# the last month
