AUGUST 13 1917. Picked snap beans in school garden, and hoed salsify and onions. Made rye drop cakes - best yet with rye. Mamma sent silk rug woven at Moscow. Helped Hans in manual training room in schoolhouse in P.M. on magazine rack. Stuffed old stencil cushions with pine needles. Went to lake but water too cold to go clear in. Put new back in seer sucker gown. 1918. Hans brought a lot of corn, which I put to dry. Canned 2 qt. huckleberry-apple butter, 1 of plain apple butter, 1 of tomatoes, 1 of yellow pear tomatoes, 1 of okra-tomato soup, 2 of crabs, and 2 of crab pickles. Hans went to Riverside twp after dinner, leaving me a "widow". 1919. Did big washing, but battery gave out and I had to wait for Hans to put in a new one. Margaret W. came to take teacher's exams and will stay here and for suppers and breakfasts. I called on Mrs. Dr. Brookman in evening. 1920. Constance and I canned 23 qts. corn - quite a job. 1921. Baked buns, cream cake and dressed 2 chickens.
