Saving...
SEPTEMBER 9 1917. Had our first rutabagas for dinner, from the farm. Also had first fried chicken, at 20¢, and apple (6¢ a #) pie. Wrote to Cousin Frank and Helen. Hans and I walked to school garden. Had young onions for supper, planted in July. 1918. Rained, after many days of dust. I "hosed" off front porch, helped Hans straighten up basement, baked another pumpkin pie. Our two adopted chickens begged to come into house out of rain. I began skirt of black and white striped gingham. 1919. Missed seeing our team demonstrate, as I had to bathe Hilda at dorm in P.M. Watched some of the others demonstrate. Heard Mrs. Dawes demonstrate eggs. Saw "Battle of Chateau Thierry" fireworks at night. 1920. Hans took Cousin Emma to 7:30 train at Nashville. I canned 6 qt. plum butter, 6 qt. grape & elderberry juice, pickles, 2 of tomatoes, 2 cups plum jelly, and 7 cups of grape. Took nap, finished my checked apron-dress. Adela stayed all night. It rained 1/2" last night, and more today. 1921. Silo rests, to settle. We are in peaches up to our ears. Canned 51 quarts for us, Amanda, Olga, and their mother also helping. Phoned to my folks, and they came up too, about 4:30. Papa picked peaches. Velma came to stay all night.
