SEPTEMBER 14 1917. Baked molasses cookies, cleaned house. Called on Mrs. Hangen, who was not home. Went to school garden, getting last sweet corn, turnips, young onions, and last lettuce. Had first ripe tomato of our own growing. 1918. Letter from Florence. Ironed more. I had the girls for breakfast - cantaloupe, wild rice and applesauce, eggplant fritters & coffee. Then we went to town a while. Miss O'Brien signed me up to solicit membership to H. Ec. Institute. I canned 5 qts. apple butter and 1 qt. ground cherries. 1919. Slept till 9:45. Mr. Keck and Cronje Roosen here for 2 o'clock dinner. I baked pumpkin pies and nut bread. Hans went to Sioux City Fair with them and came home on the 7:38. Hilda and I went to meet him. Cool, comfortable weather and no dust. 1920. Helena will help me for three days before she leaves for her 7" grade work in State Center. She ironed while I dressed chicken, baked two dried currant pies, and canned 2 qt. tomato. We picked and pulped a lot of grapes. Letter from mamma. 19
