December 5 1917. Typed and mailed two short pieces to Exchange Dept. of Woman's Home Companion. Mended gloves. Began my ironing. Too cold for clothes to dry. Helped Hans straighten up garage part of barn. So cold we crawled in between blankets at night. 1918. Cold much better. Cut out and started skirt of blue wool dress. Wrote to momma, walked to P.O. Hans gone all day again. 1919. Packed my trunk. We had dinner at Peter Miller's and bathed Hilda there. Bid Mark Keith goodby at the hospital; Hans took me to 3 P.M. train. Amanda and August came to see us off. Hilda slept to Sioux City where we changed trains. Fed her there. Changed at Manila. Hilda slept to Perry, then bawled a while. 1920. Nice warm sunny day, but still too muddy for the Davenport trip we had planned. Was outdoors to see nearly completed cattle shed, read, wrote to Jim and Constance, and Edith Bliss. 19
