DECEMBER 24 1917. Finished trimming tree. Baked oatmeal bread, fruit cake, and made nut marshmallows and popped corn. Got two photos. Finished Hans' tie. Put it and "Liberty" picture on tree, which we lighted up. Went to Norwegian Lutheran Christmas tree and program. Cold again 1918. Helena helped me do a big washing. I made blue striped silk tie for Hans like my old waist. Got box from home. We went down town and I got cuff links for August. We four had our tree lighted in eve, August coming in, and bringing big box of bonbons. Helena gave us gold-lined silver bonbon dish. Hans gave me gloves and dandy carving set. I gave him two ties, and Helena h'dk'f, skirt holders, and desk calendar. We gave August necktie rack too. Played 500 with new deck. Hans and I winning. Ate popcorn balls, candy, etc. 1919. Hans sent me Pyrex bread pan and Hilda silver spoon. Got cards from Margaret F. + Bessie Wright I cut Hilda some rompers from black + white striped crepe dress of Maud's. Hilda's cold was too bad for her to be out. Folks went to Christmas eve entertainment in W.L. We and grandpa stayed home. He said he will give us $1700, March 1. 1920. Up too late to do much (6145). Wrapped up packages for the Skott Christmas tree, finished h'dk'f for Helena (ninth I made). Got woolen quilt for Hilda's bed mamma made, box home candy from Helen, cards from Martha, Constance, and letter from Margaret F. Helena's train 4 hrs. late at Elwood (9:30); Olga + Orville got her and us to 10:30 supper at Hans' folks, then Santa Claus came, we got our presents round the tree, + spoke pieces. 19
