April 1 1936. Cold & 2" snow! Ironed. Letters from Emily H & 7. Hans & I attended Ames party at Kretz' in Dubuque. More snow & driving bad. 1937. Letter from Jay Whitson he has recommended Hans for an U.S.D.A. job. Went to Dubuque with Hans to milk institute, Heard Miss Holmstrom & Dr. Boyd of Iowa City & Alma Jones of Ames. Father-Son banquet in eve. 1938. Tired and sleepy after too full a day—Brandt's came in eve. Waited most of forenoon to see Bruce Kirkpatrick then I went to Miller's & Middlleton. Wrote Herman, George, Hans. Cold—ground frozen in places. 1939. Baked cake, bread, rolls & nut bread. Hans & girls home at 1:30 for dinner. I took his car in to be greased. He & kids worked on "Hortense". Hans & I saw Swiss movies at Bascom Hall in eve. 19
