May 22 School out. 19 Slept all nite for once, as Hans didn't waken me coughing or snoring. Packed picnic basket for P.T.A. school picnic then ate catfish dinner in Dubuque with Hans & Mr. Rank. Thence to Cascade & home via Ray's Ford. To see Harvey Beresford in eve & over more awful hills. Washed hair. 19 Big washing—interrupted by inspector Melloy & daughter Estelle coming to learn to test kerosene. Took nap after dinner, took Signe to Dyersville to complete dental work. Mrs. Tom Briggs came home with us. 19 Early to S.S., as girls went early to practice. 5 in my class—1 new girl. The Brandt family here in P.M.—then Hadley called, then Shields! Frank went to Gunderson's with Brandt's. We played croquet. Hilda elected E.L. president. 19 First tall iris, also L. Maxwell's columbine. Went to Hort. dept. with Hans to find out our Pfitzer junipers had "too much Wis". Trimmed them, set out dec. peppers. Letter from Jay, Lawyer Knox in Stuart. Got 1 doz. each tomato, cabbage, & cauliflower plants from Schmidts' and set them out. Tired. 19
