July 3 19 My back hurts so much I couldn't do much. Baked bread in old oven again. Hans took Kathryn to farm after early supper. Got 7 & letter from Sis. 19 Shelled peas and canned 3 qt., also 6 pt. strawberry preserves. Signe did huge washing; ironed some of Hans' clothes. Hans & I at Pauline's a while, also down town. Calvin [Bennet?] here for supper. 19 Packed Hans' suitcases for 6 wks in Minn. He took Rita to Dubuque, Kathryn to his folks, leaving here at 8. I taught K & my S.S class—began reading "Madame Curie" which Herman gave Signe. Wrote Dora, Herman. Cards to Aunts Emma, Addie and Helen Pownall. 19 Got meals and began crocheting arm rests for studio couch. Signe cleaned her room and attic. Had first snap beans. Hilda and Parry Dodds came— surprise!—just as we began supper. He went on to [Waupun?]. Very warm. 19
