July 14 1936. Ironed. Too hot to do much else. Thermometer above 100°all over Iowa. (107° in Madison) 1937. Up at 4, left at 5 for Madison. Were in Morningside Heights, at the Sperley 6 acre farm 6 mi. S.E. and in Hovdal home. Reno not home. Drove to Columbus to find Mr. Sperley. Had picnic lunch in Columbus park. Found them at Prairie du Chien. Evening drive to La Crosse, where we stayed in Maple Grove cabin camp. 1938. Cool. Picked and canned 3 qt. raspberries, 4 qt. string beans, and 3 of peas—Signe picked & shelled the peas. Made a fresh apple pie & quick coffee bread. Tried to find a chicken to buy. Got a new tire in Middleton, 3 doz. eggs at Schmidt's. 1939. Cool. Took a shot at Quisling's, shopped for Signe— white felt hat & dress, etc. Canned 3 qt. beans and 1 pt peas. While K went to 1st practise of "Ruth" I went to Buehler's & McKenzie's. 19
