August 12 Hot. Hilda on evening bus to Dubuque—creamers picnic at Buckhorn tomorrow 19 We all ironed. I got car from garage box of apricots to can. Finished reading "Early Candlelight" by Lovelace. At Callahan's a minute & Eileen has flu. 19 Rather severe indigestion from 2 A.M. on. Signe canned 6 qt. peaches, & I 2 1/2 qt. apple butter & 2 qt juice. She packed some dishes and books. Read in "As the Earth Turns" 1939. Throat very sore in spite of medicine. Got beets & cucumbers to Barber's. Hans to Portage. Nellie Aitchison came on 7:00 P.M. bus. Hilda met her tho was [illegible], so Miss A. phoned—our first call. 19 Baked cakes, apple pie, dressed 2 chickens [illegible] chenille spread from Cedar Rapids peddler. Girls helped clean up house. Hans home from Mich. about 5. Leslie's came about 6. Their first visit here. 19
