OCTOBER 19 Up at 4 to get Hans' breakfast for an early start to West Union to arrest a law-breaker. Washed until elec. wire broke and couldn't finish. Mtg. of board of stewards at church in eve. Hans left at 8 for 5 weeks or more. Hard driving rain all A.M. - under front door, in north windows and some in cellar and garage. Canned 4 qt pears. 40°. Washed kitchen windows, ironed K. curtains at 11:30. Roy, Kitty and Emily H. surprised me on their way home from Milwaukee. They stayed till about 2. Had jasmine tea for dinner. Dug 2 bu. beets, lot of gladioli bulbs, picked flowers. Heavy cold and sore throat from yesterday's wind. Ironed, baked bread and pumpkin pie from my crop (3). Hans came home from Iowa at 3.
