to the head of a sand bar after sounding until near sundown the pilot gave orders to lighten the boat. The channel being near the Missouri shore the reg. was furnished with 10 rounds of amunition and the captain being unwell with the rest of the Reg. I marched our Co. off and for about 2 1/2 miles around the bar arrived at the lower extremity of the bar at about dark after waiting a while for the boats we threw
