Aug 30th. Smith's force has been passing since yesterday morning - It is thought that the R.R. will be evacuated and that we will go to Memphis today or tomorrow. Hope to be at home in ten days. Only have two days to serve - A man in Co. D was shot through the leg severing an artary and he bled to death - dying in the night. The old surgeon was so drunk that he was not able to attend to the case - He might have saved him.
