heard a wild cheer on the left and next a volley of musketry followed by the fiercest fire we almost ever heard. We sprang to our arms but a few told the story and heard the loud cheers of our men as the enemy fell back, they having tried to charge through our lines. They tried the same game on the extreme right but met with a terrible slaughter.
