brigade acted most villainously, completely gutting the town, Private houses & stores were pillaged mercilessly and their contents thrown into the streets, there being no bounds placed to the actions of the men, the officers feeling so indignant at the burning of the bridge, I never can sanction such proceedings believing that no man who ever was a gentleman could enter a private house & disgrace our uniform and the service as many of our men did to-day.
