March 14th [1863] Milligans Bend, 14, to 16 Miles, above Vicksburg on Lousiana side of River; I passed This point on the 11 Inst about 10.A.M. & went to Youngs point, in, plain Sight of Vicksburg & Directly South; at Distance of 3 or 4 Miles. The Whole of the city that Lays upon high ground stands out in bold Relief - There are 4 Gunboats & 2 Musquito Boats Great Clumsy Looking Things; Rising above The waters Edge 14 to 16 feet, presenting faced Surface not unlike The western Reserve Dairymans Cowbarns The Remark was made Several Times in My hearing that They were Round: what They are capable of Doing as Gunnboats I am unable to Determine. on passing up The River from Vicksburg to This place I Saw in the Mouth of Yazoo River two more of Those Monsters Several Iron Clads, & one Turtle Ram, The Portion above water presenting the appearance of Section, from Large Globe; formidable Looking Craft - there is no Telling to what point we shall be ordered from here or when it is the opinion of some Yazoo City is the point
